With the exception of all those awful jobs I held while working my way through college (and we all have our own horror stories), my entire working career has been in the arts as either a teacher or a museum professional. I have literally been paid all of my life to look at art, and I've loved every minute of it. I have lost count of the number of shows like this Open Regional Juried Exhibition at Barn Gallery that I have juried.
However like most teachers who can't remember the names of special students but can tell you where they sat and what grades they earned, I can still remember specific art works that I have selected over the years because they so moved, inspired, delighted or confounded me. As a painter and photographer, these are the works of art that make me wish I had created them myself. And I can think of no higher compliment from one artist to another. Consequently, when someone asks me what I look for when jurying a show, I suppose that means my criteria is jealousy.
While quality is obviously the most important issue when jurying an exhibit, I think a juror should also seek to assemble a diverse show with various mediums and subject matter. In this exhibit of 91 works, there are about 30 landscapes, a nice selection of figurative pieces and prints, and about a quarter of the works are photography-based. There should be more sculpture and more drawings, but those mediums were under-represented in submissions. I encourage artist working in those mediums to participate next year because it creates a more vibrant and interesting exhibition for the viewing public.
I hope the overall high quality of submission to the show is evident from the final selection. The "final cut" of the show is always the hardest and I found myself deleting some fine work that was technically strong but in the end unsuccessful because of a weak composition. If I am allowed one critical comment it would be to remind all artists that technical bravura, bold color and a painterly brushstroke is nothing without a strong composition. Or as Gustave Flaubert said, "One must not always think that feeling is everything. Art is nothing without form."
The Open Regional Juried Exhibition continues to attract a wonderfully creative group of artists who make us ALL jealous of their talent. The art works submitted to this juried show are no exception. Spend some time with these art works and I think you will find one of those rare pieces that will linger in your own memory.
In 2014 125 artists entered 206 works of art. 37 works by 29 members of the Ogunquit Art Association were accepted along with 54 works by 44 regional artists. Congratulations!
We thank Michael Culver for selecting a beautiful exhibition and we thank all of the artists who enter work in this exhibition year after year.
