An Open, Juried Show 2011

I wish to thank the Barn Gallery and in particular Nancy Davison and Stuart Nudelman for inviting me to participate in the 2011 Juried Exhibition. I greatly appreciated their hospitality and the warm welcome of all of the staff and volunteers during the selection process on a summer Sunday in Maine. I would also like to thank all of the artists for their efforts in bringing their works to the gallery.

I was honored to serve as the juror and was delighted to have the opportunity to see the marvelous array of works. It was a delight to see so many local artists working skillfully in diverse media, including oil, pastel, watercolor, graphite, ceramic, photography, textile, collage, and sculpture. Surrounded by the natural beauty of Maine, I was not surprised to discover artists reflecting, respecting, and reacting to the region around Ogunquit, whether it was to the undulating form of the coastline or the bustling port of lobster boats.

Those works to which I particularly gravitated were the lovely watercolor The Red Curtain—in which artist Kim Grant rendered an elegant nude. I also chose Randa Taylor Charland’s 3 Point Landing, an oil painting of a pear that has a kind of timeless monumentality. J. D. Lincoln’s photograph Lady with Book and Beads also struck a chord with me for its edgy glamour. Carol Aronson-Shore’s gouache Early Light at Strawberry Bank also registered a pleasing combination of form and color.

I hope that you will enjoy visiting the exhibition. I sought out works that demonstrated originality as well as technical prowess and grace. My congratulations to all the artists!

170 works of art were entered for the exhibition, the most ever. The juror selected 76 pieces - 20 by 16 artists of the Ogunquit Art Association and 56 by 45 regional artists. Our thanks to juror Margaret Burgess for her hard work and for her discerning eye.
